Flea & Tick Prevention
EnviroSMART uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques to control fleas and ticks. IPM relies on several pest control methods including sanitation, nonchemical and chemical solutions.
The first step is through preventive treatment of pets. Resident cooperation is key and includes the following items:
- Put your pets on some type of flea & tick prevention as recommended by your veterinarian.
- Walk and exercise your pets in manicured and maintained areas of the property.
- Avoid wooded areas or areas where wildlife may be present.
- Avoid feeding stray cats and dogs in or around your unit.
- Avoid feeding wildlife such as birds or squirrels.
- Regularly clean pet bedding and treat with a preventive as recommended by your veterinarian.
- DO NOT APPLY SPRAYS OR “BOMBS” TO CONTROL FLEAS AND TICKS.
We utilize several IPM methods to control fleas & ticks including monitoring activity with glue traps, insect growth regulators, residual insecticides, and flushing agents. Do it yourself pest control such as sprays or “bombs” should NOT be used as these store-bought products are counterproductive to our IPM products, and can move activity to different areas of the unit or building. What to expect:
- Initially you may not notice a change, or you may even see an increase in activity.
- Over time you will see a reduction in the number of active fleas and/or ticks.
- Elimination will require varying time frames up to 6 weeks based on level of infestation.
- Vacant and/or occupied units may appear to have no progress when treated for fleas if not vacuumed daily after treatment as fleas can remain in their pupae life cycle stage for weeks. Vacuuming will stimulate the fleas to emerge from the pupae stage and be exposed to the products we have applied.
